What should I look for in a college? Should I look for a profession, then choose a school or vice-versa? This is one of the questions I struggled with during my last few months of high school, and I’m sure I am not the only one. This is a huge decision, possibly the biggest one in a high schooler’s life so far. Now I am not a guidance counselor, and I never claim to be, but I can tell you a few reasons I chose St. Louis College of Pharmacy. I started looking for careers I could get a look at before I left high school; then one of my friends suggested pharmacy. I hadn’t really thought about being a pharmacist until then, but I thought I’d look into it. Of course, everyone knows that pharmacists make a decent living, but there was more to it than just the money. People trust pharmacists to keep them alive and healthy. I wanted to go into the medical field, but I didn’t want to be physician. I started researching things about pharmacy, schools and stability, and I decided that I would give it a try. Now I had picked the profession and I needed to find a school that was right for me. I didn’t really want to go to a huge school because I didn’t want to be one of those kids that fell through the cracks and go through my whole college career without knowing my professors or half my classmates. I also wanted to go to a school that was semi-close to home. This narrowed the search down to about three schools: SIUE, STLCOP, and Butler. I started looking at each school individually. I checked the price, years I’d spend there, and overall reputation of the school. After I visited STLCOP, I knew that it was the school for me. I loved the campus, the proximity to home, the good reputation, and the feeling I got when I was on campus. It has been a struggle, but I still believe that I made one of the best decisions of my life coming to STLCOP. I’ve made great friends with both peers and faculty because the class sizes are reasonable and the campus is so enclosed. I couldn’t imagine being at any other college. So why did I pick pharmacy school? Because STLCOP had everything that I wanted. I would recommend this school for anyone that is serious about pursuing the fulfilling career of a pharmacist.
